Discover Gran Canaria: A Year-Round Paradise for Divers and Travelers

ree

Gran Canaria, one of the seven Canary Islands, is a dream destination for both adventurers and beach lovers. With its eternal spring climate, volcanic beauty, and vibrant underwater world, this island offers more than just sunshine — it offers experience.

Whether you're planning a relaxing beach escape or an unforgettable diving holiday, Gran Canaria has it all. Here’s everything you need to know to plan your visit and discover why divers from around the world keep coming back.

📍 Where Is Gran Canaria?

Gran Canaria is part of the Spanish Canary Islands, located in the Atlantic Ocean off the northwest coast of Africa — just 150 km from Morocco. Thanks to its strategic location, it’s a quick and sunny getaway from most major European cities, making it a favorite among German, British, and Scandinavian travelers.

☀️ A Climate That Never Takes a Break

Often called the Island of Eternal Spring, Gran Canaria boasts pleasant weather all year long — around 18°C in winter and 26°C in summer. The south of the island, including Playa del Inglés and Maspalomas, tends to be sunnier and warmer, making it perfect for diving, beach days, or just soaking in the rays.

💬 Language and Currency

The official language is Spanish, but English and German are widely spoken in tourist areas, especially at dive centers and hotels. You’ll have no problem getting around. The currency is the Euro (€), and credit cards are accepted nearly everywhere, though it’s handy to carry small cash for local markets or cafés.

🚗 Getting Around the Island

Gran Canaria is easy to explore. Its main airport (LPA) is just 20 minutes from the capital Las Palmas and connects directly to many European cities. Public buses are reliable and inexpensive, but renting a car gives you maximum flexibility to explore hidden beaches and mountain towns.

🌊 Why the Ocean Here Is So Special

The island is surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean and offers a wide range of underwater terrains — from lava-formed reefs and arches to sandy slopes and drop-offs. Sea temperatures range from 18°C in winter to 23°C in summer. Visibility is excellent year-round, often reaching 20–30 meters, and conditions are suitable for all levels of divers.

🤿 Diving in Gran Canaria: What Makes It Unique

Gran Canaria is a diver’s dream thanks to its crystal-clear water, dramatic volcanic formations, and diverse marine life.

  • For Every Level: Whether you’re trying scuba diving for the first time or you're a certified diver looking for new challenges, Gran Canaria has the perfect site. Shore dives, caves, wrecks — it’s all here.

  • Marine Encounters: Expect to see rays, angel sharks, parrotfish, barracudas, moray eels, and even the occasional turtle or dolphin. The biodiversity is outstanding.

🏖️ More Than Just Diving

When you’re not diving, Gran Canaria offers plenty to explore on land:

  • Beaches: Chill at Playa del Inglés or visit the iconic Maspalomas Dunes.

  • Hiking: Head inland for dramatic hikes around Roque Nublo and the island’s volcanic terrain.
